# Edit a strategy's settings

You change an existing [strategy](/glossary/strategy) on its **Settings** page — the keys in the strip at the top and the cards below them — then save it and run a new backtest.

A strategy's Settings page: a strip with the strategy's Type on the left and its Rebalance and Exits keys on the right, over two columns — Asset selection on the left, Allocation on the right, with a chip to add Risk beneath.

## Steps

1. **Open the strategy's Settings.** Open **Single** in the sidebar, select the strategy, and open its **Settings**. If your preference under **How you build strategies** is **Step by step**, it opens in [Step by step](/glossary/step-by-step) instead, which edits the same settings one chapter at a time; press **See all at once** there to reach this page, for this visit only.
2. **Change a key or a card.** Pick a new **Allocation** method, for example, or another **Rebalance** interval — what each part controls is in [The settings cards, one by one](#the-settings-cards-one-by-one). The change applies to your working copy at once.
3. **Add an optional part if you need it.** A part your [strategy type](/glossary/strategy-type) does not require stays hidden until you add it: the strip offers it as a **+** key (**Exits**, or **Rebalancing** on a single [instrument](/glossary/instrument)), and the row under the cards as an **Add** chip such as **Risk**.
4. **Save, then run.** Select **Save** in the header. The same button then reads **Backtest** — select it. Until the new run finishes, the previous result shows as **Needs re-run**.

**Done.** The key or card you changed shows its new value, and the new backtest reflects it, [CAGR](/glossary/cagr) included — what a run computes: [What happens when you run a backtest?](/glossary/backtest#what-happens-when-you-run-a-backtest)

## The settings cards, one by one

A single strategy's **Settings** page holds three keys in the strip and up to three cards beneath it.

| Part | Where it sits | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| **Type** | the strip, left | Which of the four strategy types the strategy is; the menu notes "Changing type is not a conversion: you will see what changes before it happens." — see [Change a strategy's type](/docs/strategies/change-a-strategy-s-type). |
| **Rebalance** | the strip, right | How often, in months, the strategy resets its holdings to their target weights — see [rebalance](/glossary/rebalance). |
| **Exits** | the strip, right | The take-profit and stop-loss levels applied to each position — see [Set up position exits](/docs/strategies/set-up-position-exits). |
| **Asset selection** | left column | The instruments the strategy may hold, named by you or picked by a [screener](/glossary/screener) — see [Choose the instruments a strategy holds](/docs/strategies/choose-the-instruments-a-strategy-holds). |
| **Risk** | left column, once added | The market rule that switches the strategy to its Risk-Off allocation — see [Set up a risk condition](/docs/strategies/set-up-a-risk-condition). |
| **Allocation** | right column | How capital is split across the instruments — see [Choose an allocation method](/docs/strategies/choose-an-allocation-method). |

## Why can't I save my changes?

Because the strategy is Public. You can open a Public strategy's **Settings** and change what you see, but **Save** is disabled, and its tooltip reads "Public strategies can't be saved. Use "Copy to Mine" to make an editable version." Select **Copy to Mine** to add your own copy to your library, then edit and save the copy — see [Save, run and copy a strategy](/docs/strategies/save-run-and-copy-a-strategy).
