# Mark Live

Mark Live is the action that starts following a [strategy](/glossary/strategy) going forward instead of only over history. **Live means monitoring only:** Fincanva keeps tracking what the strategy's rules would hold and how that paper book would perform, and never places an order, connects to a broker or moves real money.

**Also seen as:** Go live

## How does Fincanva handle it?

- **How many strategies you may follow Live is set by your plan:** none at all on Free, 1 on Starter, 5 on Advanced, and no limit on Ultimate and Professional. See [what each plan includes](/docs/account-and-plan/what-each-plan-includes).
- Only your own strategies can be marked Live — a Public strategy has no Live control, because it is not yours to follow — and a copy never starts Live: **Duplicate** and **Copy to Mine** both produce a strategy whose Live key starts off.
- A strategy you mark Live becomes a [Live strategy](/glossary/live-strategy) on the Live page and joins your [live book](/glossary/live-book); **Unfollow** reverses it at any time and changes nothing about the strategy itself. Both directions ask for confirmation — [Follow a strategy live](/docs/live/follow-a-strategy-live) walks through them and through what changes.
- The **Live** key always shows the word **Live**: a bright green raised key with a black label and the rising line moving while the strategy is Live, a neutral raised key in muted ink with a small grey, still rising-line glyph while it is not. It sits on the strategy's action row, in the list pages' detail panel, in the **Live** column of your own rows in the Strategies table and beside each strategy in the plan tile's **Your Live strategies** list; its tooltip reads **Go live** while off and **Live** while on. Elsewhere Live is that key in small — the **Live** count in the sidebar is a small bright-green tag with the rising line and the number, and a Live strategy's sidebar row and open tab show a small bright-green square with only the rising line. The row menu offers **Mark Live**, which reads **Unfollow** once the strategy is Live.

## Does marking a strategy Live trade anything?

No. Marking a strategy Live places no orders and moves no money. Fincanva has no broker connection at all — there is nothing for an order to be sent to. Going Live starts paper monitoring: the app follows the positions the strategy's rules imply and shows how that paper book would have performed, exactly as a [backtest](/glossary/backtest) does, but continuing forward from today instead of stopping at the end of history.

The one place this can read like real trading is the [order plan](/glossary/order-plan), which lists what the strategy would buy, sell and resize at its next [rebalance](/glossary/rebalance). That list is a plan on paper — Fincanva does not act on it, and you would have to place any of those trades yourself, with your own broker, entirely at your own discretion.

## What happens when your plan stops covering a Live strategy?

Following stops — the strategy is not deleted, edited or hidden. It keeps its place in your library with its settings editable; what it loses is the following, and the results that came with it. Two different shortages stop a following. When your plan covers fewer Live strategies than you follow, you choose which ones keep being followed: on Starter, which covers 1, following 3 means keeping 1, and the other 2 stop — [Choose which strategies stay Live](/docs/live/choose-which-strategies-stay-live) is that dialog. When a strategy instead falls outside what your plan keeps active in your library, it is set aside and its following stops as a consequence; that set is decided for you, once, and the strategies you follow Live rank ahead of every other.

**A strategy followed again after months is not the same as one followed throughout, and nothing in the app will tell you so.** Fincanva records no interruption. Months of [rebalances](/glossary/rebalance) never happened: its current positions are what its rules imply today, and the [order plan](/glossary/order-plan) it now shows is the move from those positions, not from the ones someone following it throughout would hold. Keeping track of the gap is yours. [Plan compliance](/glossary/plan-compliance) covers the two reasons a strategy ends up outside a plan and how each clears.

## What does it look like in practice?

You have backtested a strategy and want to watch how it behaves from here. You open it and select the raised **Live** key, whose tooltip reads "Go live"; a dialog asks "Mark this strategy as Live?" and you confirm with **Mark as Live**. The key turns bright green with the rising line moving — the strategy appears on the Live page, its star turns gold and locks, and Fincanva starts keeping its numbers current as new market days arrive.

No broker was connected and no trade was sent. Two months later you select the **Live** key again and confirm "Stop following this strategy?" with **Stop following**. The strategy leaves the Live page, the key goes back to neutral with its glyph grey and still, its star unlocks, and its settings and whole backtest history are untouched.
