Find your way around a strategy's Analysis tabs
A strategy's Analysis reads one backtest through ten tabs, from Capital Growth to Robustness; open the strategy and choose Analysis to move between them.
Steps
- Open Analysis. Open the strategy and choose Analysis among its sections; it opens on Capital Growth, the first tab. Before the strategy's first completed backtest, every tab says there are no results yet.
- Choose a tab. Every tab reads the same backtest from its own angle. Four go by a shorter name in the row — Growth, Trades, Metrics and Start Dates — and keep their full name as their tooltip, as what a screen reader announces, and as the page's title.
- Find a tab the row has no room for. When the window is too narrow for all ten, the last tabs fold, from the right, into a menu at the end of the row that says how many it holds — "5 more", for example — and lists them by their full names. Widen the window and they come back out one at a time; the tab you are on always stays in the row.
- Set what the figures assume. In the bar at the bottom of the page, open the segment that counts the assumptions switched on — 2/3, for example. Its Simulation assumptions hold Costs & interests, Taxes and Reinvest profits. They apply to the tab you are on and are not carried to the next: every tab opens with Costs & interests and Taxes off and Reinvest profits on (simulation assumptions).
- Open a tab your plan does not include. It stays in the row, marked with the bars of the plan that includes it, and opens on what it would show instead of your figures — see What does a tab outside my plan show?
Done. The tab you chose shows the strategy's latest backtest from its angle, and the page's title is the tab's full name.
What does each Analysis tab show?
| Tab | In the row | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Capital Growth | Growth | the invested capital over the whole backtest, against your benchmark, to its final value |
| Trade History | Trades | every instrument traded, then its positions, trades, dividends and splits |
| Performance Metrics | Metrics | return, volatility, drawdown and the rest of the record, overall and year by year |
| Monthly Returns | Monthly Returns | each month's return, year by year |
| Sub-strategy Weights | Sub-strategy Weights | how a Combined split its money between its strategies over time, and the last rebalance |
| Sub-strategies | Sub-strategies | each strategy of a Combined on its own: what it added, what it cost |
| Correlations | Correlations | how a Combined's strategies move with each other, with the Combined and with the big markets |
| Start-Date Sensitivity | Start Dates | the same strategy started on other days |
| Projection | Projection | a cone of values it could reach in one to five years — a range, not a forecast |
| Robustness | Robustness | whether the result could be luck, and how risk moves under a stress scenario |
Sub-strategy Weights and Sub-strategies read the parts of a Combined, so they have something to say only there; the markets half of Correlations appears on a single strategy too. Projection and Robustness compute nothing until you ask — Calculate, or Apply scenario on the stress test — and build their result from the backtest the other tabs read. Under each tab's name, the Analysis page links the guides and terms that explain it.
What does a tab outside my plan show?
A tab your plan does not include does not disappear. It stays in the row — or in the menu at its end — and it still opens. Beside its name sits a small solid square with the level of the plan that includes it drawn as bars — one bar for Starter, two for Advanced, three for Ultimate; a screen reader announces it as "from Starter", or whichever plan it is. Where its charts would be, the page shows:
- a small button carrying that plan's bars and name. Pressing it opens a window headed "Unlocks with ·" and the plan, which says the tab is not in your plan, repeats what it shows, and offers Switch to followed by the plan's name, which opens your billing settings;
- one sentence on what the tab shows — its name is already on the tab, so the page repeats no title;
- behind them, a faded sample, drawn from a demonstration strategy rather than from yours.
None of your figures are hidden there: for a tab outside your plan, your strategy's figures for that tab are not computed at all. Nothing about the strategy changes, and the tab shows your own figures as soon as your plan includes it.
Which tabs does my plan include?
Capital Growth, Performance Metrics, Monthly Returns and Projection are on every plan — Projection with a horizon and a number of scenarios your plan sets (the Projection tab). Four depend on the plan matrix:
Trade History
Included from Starter upwards. See what each plan includes.
Start-Date Sensitivity
Included from Starter upwards. See what each plan includes.
Sub-strategy Weights
Included from Advanced upwards. See what each plan includes.
Sub-strategies
Included from Advanced upwards. See what each plan includes.
Correlations and Robustness are gated by a limit Fincanva applies itself rather than by the matrix; each names its plan on the tab, and on correlation matrix, backtest reliability and stress test. What each plan includes sets every difference side by side.
Why do my figures say they are gross of costs?
Because Costs & interests or Taxes is off, and both are off by default. Beside the figures the tab says "These figures are gross of trading costs and taxes." — or "These figures are gross of trading costs." or "These figures are gross of taxes." when only one is off. Switch one on in Simulation assumptions to see that tab net of it. A switch your plan does not include is shown closed, marked with the plan that includes it, and pressing it opens a window naming that plan. See the costs switch and the taxes switch.
A strategy I own shows no figures on any tab
A strategy outside what your plan allows — after a change of plan left you with more strategies than it covers, for example — shows why in place of the figures on every tab, ahead of any one tab's plan note. See plan compliance.
A Public strategy shows figures on a tab my plan does not include
That is expected: the plan check applies to strategies you own, so a Public strategy's tabs show their figures whatever your plan (Mine and Public). Projection and Robustness are the exceptions — their calculation is charged to whoever asks for it, so their limits and plan mark follow your plan there too.
