Instrument lists

An instrument list is a named group of instruments that Fincanva keeps with its market data, so tickers that belong together can be added to a strategy under one name. You do not create or edit lists: you browse them, open one and add its instruments, one at a time or all together.

Also seen as: list of tickers

How does Fincanva handle it?

  • In Step by step, Browse lists · N opens the Browse lists sheet: "Choose a list to see its instruments." Open a list, add its instruments one at a time or press Add all N for the whole list, and finish with Done.
  • In the search of the full view, the field reads "Search instruments or lists…" and its results have a Lists column beside Instruments; picking a list adds all its members at once, and any already selected are skipped.
  • A list stores its members by their permanent instrument identifier, so a ticker rename never drops a member.
  • A list records the group as it stands: it carries no dates and no history of who joined or left. Membership as of a past date is an index list.
  • The steps are in Asset selection.

What does it look like in practice?

You open Browse lists · N, pick a list and read its instruments. Add all N puts every one of them in Your selection, and the total under it counts them. If one member later changes its ticker, the list still resolves to the same instrument, because it is held by permanent identifier and not by the ticker symbol that changed. A list typed by hand from ticker strings would lose that member.

What does an instrument list contain?

A list holds a name and its member instruments, and nothing else: no weights, no rules, no dates. Adding a list copies its members into your selection as ordinary instruments, each one then removable on its own. Not every entry in the catalogue can be held, though — some are reference-only series — so see Tradable and Not tradable.

How is an instrument list different from a universe or an index list?

The three describe a set of instruments in different ways.

ConceptWhat defines the setDoes it carry history?
Instrument listA named group kept with the market data, which you pickNo: current membership only
UniverseYour own filters (country, exchange, index, sector, asset type)No: resolved for the run you are setting up
Index listMembership of a real market indexYes: recorded as of each historical date
