Read the columns of your matches
A screener's results table shows its matches under five tabs of columns — Overview, Returns, Fundamentals, Ratios and Dividend — and each tab reads the same instruments through a different lens.
Steps
- Place the instrument on Overview. Symbol is the instrument itself, its name with its exchange and ticker beneath; Asset type reads Stock, ETP or crypto, and Asset subtype the narrower type inside it; Market Cap is the total market value of all its shares; 1Y is its return over the last 12 months, beside a one-year price sparkline; Exchange is where it trades, Country where the company is based, Sector its broad industry group and Industry the specific one.
- Read how its price moved on Returns. 1Y, YTD (since the start of the year), 1M (the last month) and MTD (since the start of the month) are four windows on the same price series, shown with Exchange. Sharpe is the instrument's own return over the last 12 months per unit of volatility, with no risk-free rate subtracted, and Beta how much it moves with the market.
- Read the accounts on Fundamentals. Sales is revenue over the trailing twelve months. Sales growth, Gross profit growth, EBITDA growth, Net income growth and FCF growth compare that trailing-twelve-month figure with the year before, and Working capital growth compares working capital with the year before. D/E is debt to equity, Quick ratio short-term liquidity and ROE return on equity.
- Read what you pay on Ratios. EV is enterprise value, shown beside Market Cap; P/E, P/S, P/FCF, P/BV and EV/EBITDA divide price — or enterprise value — by earnings, sales, free cash flow, book value and EBITDA; FCF yield is free cash flow as a percentage of price, the inverse view of P/FCF.
- Read what it pays on Dividend. Last Price is the most recent close, Div per share the dividend per share, Div yield that dividend as a percentage of price, and Payout ratio the share of earnings paid out as dividends.
- Check the unit line — the small second line under a header, shown only where the basis needs stating: TTM under Sales, TTM · YoY under the five trailing-twelve-month growth columns, YoY under Working capital growth, and % under FCF yield, Div yield and Payout ratio. TTM and YoY explains that basis.
- Keep only the columns you read with Columns, which hides or shows them for the tab you are on and remembers the choice per tab.
Done. You can read any cell of the table, and every header carries its own hint on hover: every tab starts with Symbol and Asset type, so a row stays identifiable wherever you are; a dash means no value is available, which is not the same as zero; return and growth columns are tinted, and the 1Y sparkline takes its colour from the sign of its return. Selecting a header sorts the whole result set, not only the rows on screen.
How do you read one row across the tabs?
Take one match, a mid-size industrial company, through the five tabs.
- Overview places it: the Symbol cell names it with its exchange and ticker, Asset type reads Stock, Market Cap puts it in the mid-size band, and Exchange, Country, Sector and Industry classify it. The 1Y cell shows its twelve-month return beside the path it took.
- Returns breaks that path down: 1Y, YTD, 1M and MTD are four windows on one price series, so a strong 1Y beside a weak MTD means a good year with a soft current month. Sharpe and Beta add how choppy the ride was and how closely it tracked the market.
- Fundamentals turns to the accounts: Sales gives the revenue level, the six growth columns the direction of travel against the year before, and D/E, Quick ratio and ROE describe leverage, short-term liquidity and profitability.
- Ratios prices those accounts: EV beside Market Cap, then five ways of dividing price by a fundamental, plus FCF yield as the inverse view of P/FCF.
- Dividend covers the payout, Payout ratio showing how much of earnings the dividend consumes.
Read in that order the row goes from what it is, to how its price behaved, to what the business did, to what you pay for it, to what it pays you.
