Screen for a crossing or a valuation band

Guide5 min5 steps

To screen for something that happened — a price crossing a line — or for a state, such as a market valuation band, add one of six filters and pick a special relation instead of a numeric operator.

Steps

  1. Add a filter that offers them. Select Add filter and pick one of the six: SMA, Bollinger Bands or Stochastic under Technical → Indicators, Mkt SMA or Buffet Indicator under Market & Sector (Market Technical and Market Fundamental), or Sec SMA (Sector Technical). On these filters the special relations replace the numeric operators.
  2. Choose the relation. On SMA, Bollinger Bands, Mkt SMA and Sec SMA: Crosses Above or Crosses Below — the price crossed up or down through the line within the window — or Price Above or Price Below, where the price sits now. On Stochastic: Fast Bullish Cross, Fast Bearish Cross, Slow Bullish Cross or Slow Bearish Cross — the fast or slow line crossed up or down — or Fast/Slow Bullish Cross and Fast/Slow Bearish Cross, the fast line crossing up or down through the slow one. On Buffet Indicator, one of five valuation bands, highest to lowest: Strongly Overvalued, Overvalued, In Range, Undervalued, Strongly Undervalued.
  3. Set the window on a crossing: 7, 14, 21 or 28 trading days, 28 by default. The condition passes when the crossing happened at any point inside it. The price and band relations take no window and no threshold.
  4. Read the You're saying line. It restates the condition — "SMA crosses above (28 days)." for the default crossing on SMA.
  5. Select Apply. The chip joins the strip in shorthand: X-Above {N}d for Crosses Above, > Price for Price Above, a band by its name.

Done. The chip sits in the filter strip — SMA (252) X-Above 28d for a default SMA crossing — and Matches counts the instruments for which the crossing happened inside the window, or which sit on the side or in the band you picked.

What does the chip's shorthand mean?

Each relation shows in the chip as a short code; in a crossing's code, {N}d is the window in days, never a threshold.

The eight crossing codes stay in English in every language; the Price Above and Price Below chips and the five band chips are translated.

What is the window on a cross relation?

The number on a cross relation is a lookback window in trading days, and the condition passes when the crossing happened at any point inside it. The choices are 7, 14, 21 and 28 days, and 28 is the default — so out of the box a cross relation asks "has this crossed in the last four weeks", not "did it cross today". A shorter window makes the test stricter, because the crossing has to be more recent to count.

Price Above and Price Below carry no window. They describe where the price is right now relative to the line, so they stay true for as long as the price stays on that side, while a cross relation goes false once the crossing ages past the window.

What does a bullish moving-average cross look like?

Take the SMA filter with its default 252-bar average — roughly one trading year — on a stock that has been below that average for months and then rallies through it eight trading days ago.

  • Pick Crosses Above and leave the window at 28 days. The crossing happened 8 days ago, inside the window, so the stock passes and the chip reads SMA (252) X-Above 28d.
  • Narrow the window to 7 days. The same crossing is now one day outside it, and the stock stops passing — with no change to its price at all.
  • Switch to Price Above. The window disappears, and the stock passes for as long as its price stays above the 252-bar average, whether it crossed eight days ago or eight months ago.

The three conditions read the same chart and select different things: a recent event, a recent-enough event, and a current state.

Why can one condition empty the whole screen?

Because Mkt SMA and Buffet Indicator read the market rather than an instrument, a condition on them gates the entire screen: on a date where it fails, the screener returns no matches at all. Sec SMA gates whole sectors the same way — see filter taxonomy. The five valuation bands are also mutually exclusive: on any date the reading sits in exactly one of them, so two conditions asking for two different bands match nothing.

A filter's Advanced inputs still apply on top of a special relation: the SMA filter's Bars sets how long the moving average is, and Months Ago shifts the whole reading back in time — see lag, period, and multiplier.
